Pants Won't Tighten Up?

Ask about specific settings, like fabric properties, or the difference between the sewing tools. These would be things you would expect to see in a software manual.

Pants Won't Tighten Up?

Hi All,

I had a problem getting a waist band to tighten up enough to hold the pants up. I eventually gave up on that pattern and drew all new patterns from Lori's Jeans tutorial. I think I have all the patterns setup correctly and the sewing right, however, the same problem still persists, the pants won't tighten up. I got bucket but for some reason?

How do I make the pants fit right up top?

Thanks

Just looking at the 2D screen capture, my first impression is that the patterns, while of a good design overall, are far too short on the vertical axis. There just isn't enough cloth to wrap around the crotch and extend all the way up to the waist. (And very likely, the horizontal axis is too small as well, and you will need more cloth there, but not as much.)
Try running a measurement tape from your desired waistline down to the center of the avatar's crotch, where the leg patterns will meet. Then, use Shift-Z to show the current measurements on the patterns. Compare the two. Use that as a guide to scale up your patterns to fit the avatar better. You can also use the Strain mapping to show where the cloth is stretched too tightly, and by what percentage.

Thanks for the reply Rosemaryr,

Having that a additional measurement makes sense. Mine was a little off so I adjusted it to match the measurement.

However, I still get the same problem. My waist is measured at 691 and I have the top part of the pants set to 538 wide. So that should be a snug fit at the waist but the simulator won't contract the radius of that waist band. I just don't get it. Even if I enable Elastic there is no tightening effect. It is almost as if some invisible obstacle exists between my clothing and the avatar.

Even if I discard all patterns and make a single box to wrap around the waist, it still will not tighten up? In this example the waist is measured at 691 and the box is 690 wide. That is correct, isn't it? The waist band should be the same size as the waist measurement? Using the Default fabric colorized orange.

On a whim, I thought I'd try the same test on a default avatar, not my imported FBX from MakeHuman.

It works as expected using pre-fab avatars. So the problem seems to be with the Avatar itself, ugh!

I also viewed the stress map and it does not make sense. Why is RED displayed in the areas where the pants are so lose?

Also why are those buttons (round green items) from my jacket being displayed by the stress map? I have selected all the jacket patterns and have hidden and frozen them..? But they do look like they might be interfering somehow...

I think I have run into some kind of bug. When I display the jacket, I can clearly see that it is being included in the collision calculation for the pants.

I thought if a pattern was hidden it would no longer be included for collision consideration.

Is there any way to keep a frozen hidden pattern from affecting another patterns collision path?

(I thought I already posted a response to the last issue, so here it goes again....)

Use the 'Deactivate' function instead of 'Freeze'.
As you have seen, 'Freeze' on a pattern piece just makes it unmoving... but still able to interact with other pattern pieces. Deactivate, on the other hand, will make a pattern piece (or garment) totally incapable of effecting any other pattern piece (or sewing line, if you choose as well).
